2. Buildings, rooms and time slots

The physical places and the periods of the day that classes, exams and defenses are scheduled into.

WhoAdmin
WhereSetup›Buildings, Rooms, Time Slots

The timetable is generated automatically later on. It can only place classes into rooms and time slots that exist here, so set them up carefully.

Buildings

Setup › Buildings › Add Building — code and name for each building. You can add several in one go: fill in the form, press Add to list, and save the whole list at the end.

Rooms

Setup › Rooms › Add Room — for each room:

  • Building, code and name
  • Type — Classroom, Laboratory or Auditorium. Lecture classes go to classrooms, lab classes to laboratories, and big combined lectures to auditoriums.
  • Capacity (1–1000 seats) — a class is only placed in a room big enough for it.
  • Floor and status (inactive rooms are never used)
  • Restrict to departments (optional) — for rooms only some study programs may use, such as design computer labs or hotel practice rooms. Leave empty to allow everyone.

The add page takes many rows at once, so a whole building can be entered in one go.

Time slots

Setup › Time Slots has three tabs:

TabWhat it’s for
Session ScheduleThe teaching periods of the day, for example “Session 1 · 07:30–09:10”.
Exam ScheduleThe periods exams are held in.
Defense SchedulePeriods for thesis defenses only. The head of program needs at least one to schedule a defense.

Rules for teaching slots:

  • A slot’s length must be a multiple of the minutes per credit (50 by default, see Academic rules) — a 100-minute slot holds a 2-credit class.
  • Slots can’t overlap; the page warns you.
  • Breaks such as lunch or Friday prayer are not slots — set them as blocked periods in Academic Settings › Scheduling so classes never land in them.

A time slot that is already used by classes, sessions or exams can’t be deleted.
