8. Assessments and the gradebook

Coursework, group work, rubrics, the class forum and how the final grade is built.

Everything a class is graded on comes from the course syllabus written by the Head of Program (Courses): each component (for example Assignments 30%, Mid exam 30%, Final exam 40%) has a weight, and each track (lecture, lab) adds up to its share of the course.

Coursework

In the class’s Assessment tab the lecturer creates assignments, quizzes and projects:

  1. Pick the type — one of the syllabus’s coursework components.
  2. Add the title, instructions, due date, maximum score and attempts, and how students answer (text, a file, or both). Publish it when it’s ready for students.
  3. Students submit before the due date; the lecturer grades each submission (score and feedback), using the course’s rubric for that type of assessment when there is one.

Mid and final exams are created in the Exams tab instead, from the syllabus’s exam components — see Exams.

Group work

An assessment can be set as group work with a minimum and maximum group size and a deadline for forming groups.

  • Students create a group and invite classmates by student ID; invitees accept (final) or decline. Working alone is allowed when the minimum is 1.
  • Or the lecturer forms random groups for everyone still without one — preview, shuffle as often as needed, then confirm.
  • Any member submits for the group. The lecturer grades the group once (every member gets the score) and can adjust a single member’s score.

Rubrics

Rubrics describe what each score means per criterion (excellent → unsatisfactory). Each course has its rubrics per type of assessment (quiz, assignment, mid, final, project) on the course’s Rubric tab, starting from the campus default rubrics (Academic rules). Lecturers score submissions criterion by criterion.

The class forum

Each class has a forum:

  • Discussion threads — anyone in the class can post and reply.
  • Assignment threads — created by the lecturer, with a closing date and a number of attempts; replies are graded (0–100 with feedback).

Threads can be pinned or locked.

The gradebook

The Gradebook brings it together: every student’s scores per component and the weighted total, using the syllabus weights. A course with both lecture and lab combines the two by their share of the course.

  • Students see their own scores and the next thing due on Learning Management › Assessment.
  • The lecturer’s Assessment page gives an overview of all their classes and what still needs grading or publishing.
  • The Head of Program sees the gradebooks of their program in Gradebook.

At the end of the semester the grades are submitted and locked — see Grades and the grade lock.
